Jon Burlingame editorBillie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell won the original-song Oscar for “No Time to Die,” the title tune for the latest James Bond film, at Sunday’s 94th annual Academy Awards. It’s the third consecutive Academy Award for music in the long-running spy franchise, following Adele’s win for 2012’s “Skyfall” and Sam Smith’s for “Writing’s on the Wall” from 2015’s “Spectre.”The two wrote the song nearly three years ago and it was released in February 2020.It was also a clean sweep for the brother-and-sister duo, as they had already won a Grammy and the Golden Globe, plus Critics Choice and Society of Composers & Lyricists awards, for “No Time to Die.”Eilish, 20, becomes the second youngest honoree in this category, after 19-year-old Czech-Icelandic songwriter Markéta Irglová’s win for “Falling Slowly” from 2007’s “Once.” O’Connell is 24.

Eilish and Finneas wrote “No Time to Die” in late 2019, as post-production on the 25th 007 epic was underway. Producer Barbara Broccoli had invited them to submit a song, and they penned a melancholy ballad about betrayal and heartbreak based on a reading of the first 20 pages of the script.Composer Hans Zimmer, arriving in London to begin work on the score, championed the song to Broccoli, fellow producer Michael Wilson and director Cary Joji Fukunaga, who then flew the duo to London to see the film and consult on orchestral arrangements and production.Star Daniel Craig also gave his blessing to the four-minute song, which debuted at the top of the UK singles chart in February 2020 and peaked at no.

Billie Eilish and Finneas Give Haunting Performance of 'No Time to Die' During 2022 Oscars
Billie Eilish just gave the performance of a lifetime at the 2022 Oscars. As first-time Academy Award nominees this year, the 20-year-old singer and her music partner, brother Finneas, performed their James Bond theme song, «No Time to Die,» during the awards show on Sunday. The haunting track, which was first released in February 2020 and later served as the signature tune for the film of the same name, filled the star-studded Dolby Theatre as Billie sang and Finneas played the piano.Accompanied by musicians behind them, the siblings both wore black looks as they delivered their incredible performance.«No Time to Die» is one of five nominees this year for Best Original Song, joining 's «Be Alive,» 's «Dos Oruguitas,» 's «Down to Joy» and ' «Somehow You Do.» The siblings are in acclaimed musical company as Beyoncé, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Van Morrison and Diane Warren are some of the names behind the songs. Following the news of their nomination, the siblings told ET in part in a statement, «Words cannot describe how honored and excited we are to have been nominated for an Academy Award for our song 'No Time to Die.' It was a lifelong dream of ours to write a Bond theme, and one we never thought would ever come true. It’s completely unbelievable that we are here being recognized for this song, and this is a peak life experience for us as songwriters and artists.

Billie Eilish and brother Finneas become youngest two-time Oscar winners in history
“I’m Just Ken” might actually win Best Original Song over “What Was I Made For?” — Billie Eilish’s far superior “Barbie” tune. After all, another Oscar win would make Eilish, 22, and her producer brother, Finneas, 26, the youngest two-time Academy Award winners in history after their victory in 2022 for the Bond theme song “No Time To Die.”Perhaps with some voters thinking “too much, too soon,” an upset seemed to be brewing. But now the siblings are in the history books — as they should be.Sometimes it’s just as simple as real recognizing real — whether it’s at the Oscars or the Grammys. And when Eilish got a standing O from Hollywood’s finest after performing “What Was I Made For?” at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday night, it was an acknowledgement of just how far ahead she was of the other Best Original Song nominees. To be honest, it wasn’t even as hauntingly heartbreaking as her performance of the tune just before it took Song of the Year at the Grammys last month. But it was still real artistry on raw display that was all the chills and feels.“What Was I Made For?” also became only the 10th song in history to win both the Grammy for Song of the Year and the Oscar for Best Original Song. That puts it in some pretty prestigious company, with the likes of “Moon River” (from 1961’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”) “The Way We Were” (from 1973’s “The Way We Were”), “Evergreen” (from 1976’s “A Star Is Born”), “You Light Up My Life” (from 1977’s “You Light Up My Life”), “A Whole New World” (from 1992’s “Aladdin”) and “My Heart Will Go On” (from 1997’s “Titanic”).Bravo, Billie and Finneas.
