Why young people are watching 'less than an hour' of TV per day

Whether it's Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon Prime, many people rely on on-demand streaming services for their entertainment.These are particularly popular among younger people, as a new study from communications regulator Ofcom has shown.So much so that those aged 16 to 24 spend less than an hour per day (53 minutes) watching broadcast TV.

This figure is in stark contrast to those over 65, who still spend over five and a half hours each day watching scheduled television.This highlights a clear "generation gap" in viewing habits, with public service broadcasters being warned of falls in audience viewing numbers.The way that younger people get their entertainment largely isn't from broadcast television any more.Instead, streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime have taken over.

Video-based content sites such as YouTube and Tik Tok are also included in this category, with nine in ten 18-24 year olds saying they bypass TV channels when looking for something to watch.Instead, they head straight to the likes of Netflix, which is the most popular streaming site in the UK.

But the cost of living crisis is having an impact here as well, with the number of households subscribing to at least one streaming service falling by more than 350,000.Although nearly three-quarters (73%) of streaming subscribers who had cancelled earlier this year told the regulator they thought they would subscribe again at some point.Ian Macrea, Ofcom's director of market intelligence, said: “The streaming revolution is stretching the TV generation gap, creating a stark divide in the viewing habits of younger and older people."Traditional broadcasters face tough competition from online streaming platforms, which they’re partly meeting
