With many couples starting families in their 30s, it might be said that the school run begins at 40. With life expectancy for the average baby boomer at around 79 years, 40 may well mark the beginning of the stressful “sandwich” years for us Gen X-ers.
For me, life certainly began to change at 40. My three children were at school and nursery, leaving me with an identity and career crisis – not able to do full-time work, but no longer required as a 24/7 mother.
Engagements and weddings were slowly edged out by school functions and, later, news of disharmony, separations and poorly parents.
