Bridget is, of course, a quintessentially British character based off writer Helen Fielding’s books. However, Renée is an American actress whose casting raised eyebrows back in the early noughties.
Not even her co-star Hugh Grant was convinced she could pull off the highly coveted role. Opening up for the new documentary Being Bridget Jones, the British actor said: ‘There was a whole scandal about why isn’t this a British actress?’ ‘I didn’t know Renée Zellweger, and a Texan playing a British character, it did seem like a stretch,’ he explained the Independent reports.
