Why ambitious plans to transform historic Hulton Park Estate into 'Ryder Cup golf course' and homes have been met with opposition

The historic Hulton Park Estate, which borders Over Hulton, Westhoughton and Atherton, was home to the Hulton family from 1167 until the 1990s.

In 1993, it was passed onto Geoffrey Hulton's nephew Hugh Butterfield, before eventually being sold to property developers Peel in 2010.

Peel initially announced plans for a major development at the site in 2016, but were met with a significant backlash from the local community.
