United remain in talks with Los Blancos and will seek a compromise over the fee as the Spanish side value Varane at £80million despite him having just one year left on his current contract.
The Reds have a long-standing interest in the Frenchman and United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was prepared to sanction a £100million move for Varane in the summer of 2018 but his value was well in excess of that figure at the time.
