WHEN Emily Dickinson got the train to visit a friend she ended up in floods of tears –  because she could not read the signs.

That trip to London four years ago was the last time the mother of two left her home town on her own. Dyslexic Emily, 23, from Huddersfield, says: “I didn’t know how to get back.

I felt so alone.” But she isn’t alone. Britain has one of the worst literacy levels in Europe. Up to eight million adults are functionally illiterate, meaning daily tasks most of us take for granted — such as reading the destination of a train or a text — are virtually impossible.

To overcome her fears of travelling alone, Emily signed up for a new Channel 4 documentary, The Write Offs. The two-part series explores the UK’s low adult.
