Former US vice-president Walter Mondale who served under Jimmy Carter and went on to suffer a historic defeat against Ronald Reagan has died aged 93.
Mondale was a leading Democrat voice of the late 20th century but he suffered a landslide loss to Reagan in the 1984 presidential election.
Carter called him the “best vice-president in our country’s history” with Mondale his running mate as he won the 1976 election but then lost four years later.
In a statement, Carter said he was "an invaluable partner and an able servant of the people of Minnesota, the United States and the world".
