US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick took a new approach to life after a difficult call with his ex-girlfriend about Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Fitzpatrick, 27, claimed his first major with a one-shot victory at The Country Club on Sunday evening. The Englishman held his nerve when others lost theirs to record a dramatic success ahead of Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler. It was the Sheffield United fan's first major win and his first PGA Tour victory, eight years after he turned professional.

Fitzpatrick has been knocking on the door for a while now, and his breakthrough could be down to a harrowing phone call with his ex-girlfriend - tennis player Deniz Khazaniuk.Fitzpatrick revealed to the Daily Mail in March how a call with Khazaniuk about her family's struggles following Russian's invasion of Ukraine changed his perspective on golf - and life. "She was telling me about her gran who had a couple of strokes recently and can hardly walk, so she can’t go anywhere.

Then she told me about her uncle who had just packed his bags and was off to fight tomorrow," he said. "I was sitting there in Florida ready to practise and it hit me, the contrast between the fact he might never come back and what I do."I’d already decided to be a little easier on myself this year and appreciate all that I have but that phone call just emphasised I don’t want to be miserable for the rest of my life worrying about winning golf tournaments.
