The nation will be blanketed by a biting layer of 'severe' frost today with warnings of freezing fog in many parts as temperatures plunge below zero.
The three-day weekend of sub zero temperatures begins on Friday with achingly cold weather to be felt across the UK tonight.
The Met Office has said that while the day will begin dry and with sunny spells there will be 'widespread frost for most' by the evening and it will be 'locally severe.' There are also warnings of 'freezing fog patches' later on.
The mercury is expected to stay cold throughout the weekend and overnight there will be sub zero temperatures felt in many places.
