Perth on December 19, 1943 - two years after his brother Barrie - their dad, also Barrie, worked at Pullars, the drycleaners, and mum Doris was a keen bowler.

Dougie attended St Ninian’s Primary School and then Perth Academy before leaving to train as a mechanic with Frews of Perth in Riggs Road.His dad used to talk about his days in the army, working as a despatch rider, and that probably encouraged Dougie to become interested in motorbikes.Cousin Ian Slee recalled that Dougie and another cousin, Sandy, spent a lot of their teenage years running about tracks near Hillyland on their motorbikes.In his early teens, Dougie joined the 38F (Perth Squadron) Air Training Corps in Dunkeld Road and, along with his cousins, enjoyed trips in aircraft.
