A 60 year-old man has died in hospital after he was hit by a van as he walked across a road, police said today. A man aged in his 40s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, Greater Manchester Police added.
It's understood he remained in police custody today - Christmas Eve - for questioning. Emergency services were called just before 8pm on Monday to reports of a road traffic collision involving a van and a pedestrian on Manor Avenue in Sale, Trafford.
It's understood to have happened outside a Nisa store near the junction with Plymouth Road. A GMP spokesperson said: "Emergency services attended the scene, and a 60 year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Sadly, he has since passed away. "Initial enquiries suggest a vehicle was travelling along Manor Avenue in the direction of Carrington Lane before the vehicle collided with a pedestrian who was crossing the road, which caused the pedestrian to sustain serious and fatal injuries. "A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving." Paramedics were in attendance, including a rapid response vehicle and ambulance, together with multiple police vehicles.
