Alexandre Lacazette had opened the scoring with a thunderbolt effort early in the first half. But almost immediately Son hit back after capitalising on a defensive mix-up between Sead Kolasinac and David Luiz.
But just as it looked like the points would be shared, Belgian Alderweireld nodded in to give Jose Mourinho the perfect first derby.
