Arsenal's £52.5m signing of Thomas Partey has gone some way towards demonstrating the faith that those behind the scenes have in their manager Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners had already been active in the transfer market this summer, completing deals for winger Willian, centre-back Gabriel and backup goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson.
Yet there was still something missing as the clock ticked down towards the end of the window, with Arteta known to be desperate to add a quality central midfielder to his squad.
A deal to sign Lyon's Houssem Aouar broke down, with the two clubs unable to agree on a fee, and it looked as though Arteta and his staff would ultimately end up frustrated in their efforts.
