Third coronavirus lockdown could hit after Christmas warns "Professor Lockdown"

A third national lockdown could be on the cards in January, a scientist dubbed Professor Lockdown has warned. Epidemiologist Neil Ferguson said lifting the restrictions for Christmas Day could have a knock on effect into the New Year.

Professor Ferguson from Imperial College London said if Lockdown 2.0 which comes into affect on Thursday is able to drive down infections "things could be relaxed" for December 25.

Speaking on Times Radio's breakfast show, he said: "Relaxation will inevitably pose some risks, it will lead to more transmission, but, if that's from a low baseline level, the costs of that and the harms it causes are going to be less than if we were at current levels."
