Thieves rip up and steal York stone flags from outside Grade I-listed church

Prestwich. Volunteers at St Mary's Church discovered that more than 20 paving stones were missing on Monday morning.Thieves used the cover of darkness to dig up the expensive stones from the churchyard overnight, leaving parishioners and church workers appalled.Rev Shaun Conlon, the vicar at St Mary's, in Church Lane, described the theft as 'hugely disappointing'.He added: "They were there Sunday and gone Monday morning."Some people walking their dogs alerted some of the church wardens."Whoever did this had stacked up some more by the gate which they had pulled up but not taken away."The flags are believed to date back to the early 1800s and were ripped up from a pathway looping around the main church building.Several gravestones also make.
