Dr David Rosenberg explained. “When we operate today, a small amount of cartilage may be excised but the shape is changed by bending the cartilage with stitches so that you keep a significant amount of the tissue in place.”Cartilage manipulation has meant speedier recovery times after rhinoplasty with days replacing the traditional weeks of bandages and bruising.
As yet though, the latest technology beyond stitching for cartilage manipulation remains lab-based. A team led by Dr Brian Wong at the University of Irvine in California discovered that heating cartilage with infra-red laser allowed a window of time when the tissue becomes warm and malleable.
