The lesser known symptom of the menopause that a leading doctor wants all women to know

One of the country's leading menopause experts is encouraging more people to be aware of a debilitating and often overlooked symptom of the menopause.

Consultant Asha Kasliwal, who works for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and runs her own self-referral menopause clinic, says most women will be aware of the common signs of the menopause including irregular periods, hot flushes, difficulty sleeping and mood swings.

But she is wanting to create more noise around the symptom of 'brain fog,' as it can be difficult for sufferers to recognise and talk about with their colleagues, friends or family. READ MORE: 'I was told I'd never have children - then something incredible happened' Dr Kasliwal says she has seen patients in her clinics that are terrified that the symptom might be early onset dementia, or a sign of a serious illness, but in most cases it's temporary.

Brain fog is more commonly seen in women during the perimenopausal period - which is the transitional time around menopause - because of fluctuating hormones.
