Sebastian Vettel is continuing his activism by sporting a special helmet at this weekend’s F1 Canadian Grand Prix. The four-time world champion has been vocal about a number of issues in recent years, including gay rights and climate change.
For the Montreal race, the German is wearing a helmet which reads ‘STOP MINING TAR SANDS’ and ‘CANADA’S CLIMATE CRISIS’.It refers to Canada’s oil sands mining.
Extracting oil from the heavy sands is said to be three to five times more energy-intensive than pumping it from wells and can have an adverse environmental impact.
However, Vettel’s message has been labelled hypocritical in some quarters as his helmet also carries the logo of Saudi oil company Aramco, one of his Aston Martin team’s main sponsors.Sky Sports F1 reported Ted Kravitz alluded to the potential contradiction of messaging during his Notebook programme following qualifying in Montreal, where both Aston Martins exit exited in Q1“Sebastian Vettel is wearing a darker helmet drawing attention to his environmental activism credentials, Canada’s climate crime, I think he calls it, which about Alberta’s tar sands,” said Kravitz.“It’ slightly incongruous.
