Jimmy Carr looks downcast as he’s pictured for first time amid Holocaust joke backlash as petition gathers steam
Jimmy Carr broke cover this week as the storm of controversy surrounding his Holocaust joke continues to mount. The 8 Out Of 10 Cats comedian was spotted emerging from his London home alone on Tuesday evening. Appearing ready for business, Carr looked smart in a light blue blazer with a dark shirt and trousers. The TV star then hopped into a waiting car where he seemed to be more relaxed and removed his jacket. It’s the first time the 49-year-old has been seen pictured outrage erupted over a joke in his Netflix special His Dark Material, which was released in December. In the stand-up show, Carr says people ‘never mention the thousands of Gypsies that were killed by the Nazis’ in the Holocaust, because ‘no one ever wants to talk about the positives’. He has since faced severe backlash from Traveller and Roma charities, anti-fascist organisations and even several MPs including Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Earlier this week, it was revealed that a petition urging Netflix to remove the joke from the special had been signed over 14,000 times. The charity The Traveller Movement, which started the petition, described the gag as ‘nothing short of a celebration of genocide’.It goes on: ‘Hundreds of thousands of Gypsies, Roma, and Traveller people were killed in the Holocaust.
