“Mogul Mowgli” is one hell of a film with what might be Riz Ahmed’s best performance of his career. The fact that it marks the narrative feature debut for filmmaker Bassam Tariq is incredibly impressive.

Zed (Riz Ahmed) is a British-Pakistani rapper on the brink of stardom. After plugging away for years, bouncing from venue to venue across Europe, he’s finally given the opportunity to be an opener for what could be the biggest tour of his career.

Earlier this year, Riz Ahmed was Oscar-nominated for his stunning lead performance in the music drama “Sound Of Metal,” and in many ways, that should boost your excitement for a somewhat similar music drama, “Mogul Mowgli.” But the timing of this indie couldn’t be better because now the anticipation for the film has to be even higher: award-winning filmmaker Bassam Tariq, the “Mogul Mowgli” director, has been chosen to direct Marvel’s “Blade,” which has got to be a big co-sign on ‘Mowgli’ considering not that many people have seen it and Tariq really hasn’t made a lot of more notable films other than the celebrated indie doc “These Birds Walk” (which earned Tariq the title of a Filmmaker to watch by Filmmaker Magazine).

Almost exactly two years after Marvel announced that Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali will be the new Blade, the studio has found a director in Bassam Tariq.The filmmaker, who directed Riz Ahmed in the critically-acclaimed 2020 film Mogul Mowgli, is in talks to direct, according to Deadline, though the deal is not complete.Marvel has not commented on the news, though the studio reportedly spent months searching for the right filmmaker.

Home Team, the recently-launched TV and film production banner founded by The End of the F***ing World producer Dominic Buchanan and Mogul Mowgli producer Bennett McGhee, has made its first major hire. Jessica Hill has been appointed as senior development executive, joining the company after three years at Sister (Chernobyl, Gangs of London), where she was script executive on the upcoming HBO/Sky drama Landscapers and script editor on the BBC/Netflix series Giri/Haji.
