Grimes adds a rule to her AI music offer: no Nazi anthems
Grimes may have invited anyone who’s currently sitting on the generative AI bandwagon to “feel free to use my voice without penalty”, but that doesn’t mean there are no rules at all in this brave new AI world.Although she likes the idea of “open sourcing all art and killing copyright”, the musician admitted yesterday that “we may do copyright takedowns … for really really toxic lyrics with Grimes’ voice”.The recent surge in interest in using generative AI tools to create new tracks in the style of existing artists – by getting the AI to crunch data linked to the work of those existing artists – has raised concerns in certain parts of the music community. The music industry maintains that training an AI in that way requires a licence from whoever owns the copyright in the existing music. Failure to do so constitutes copyright infringement, and labels and publishers may sue you, or at least urge streaming services to stop distributing music created by unlicensed data mining. But Grimes declared at the weekend that people are more than welcome to train an AI with her back catalogue in order to create new tracks using a machine version of her voice, provided that they are willing to share any royalties those tracks might generate.“I’ll split 50% royalties on any successful AI-generated song that uses my voice”, she tweeted.

women. Whether the songs message activism wrapped up in gorgeous harmonies and danceable beats like wartime sweethearts The Andrews Sisters during the 1940s and soul-pop icons like Martha and the Vandellas the in 1960s; are bonafide hits from history-shaping girl groups in the late ’90s like The Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child; or pure-pop confections from The Pussycat Dolls or Fifth Harmony, the legacy of the girl group music is storied and, frankly, dazzling. Everyone has their preferences of course, but below, we’ve rounded up a handful of iconic songs by girl groups—some more, well, pervasive than others, but all iconic in their own way—that deserve a spot on any playlist, for any occasion. Written and arranged by Rick James, 1975’s “In My House”—an unapologetic ode to the booty call, fuses synth, funk, disco, and pop and the result is a near-perfect dance track that recently received a second life thanks to its in the pilot of FX's groundbreaking series Pose. The sonic perfection of true 1990s R&B is hard to match and this track holds up better than ever. Come for Jade’s sharp harmonies and stomping New Jack Swing beats, and stay for the nostalgia factor that'll send you if you came of age during the ’90s. The song is so iconic that samples abound, including one Picking even a handful of the best Destiny’s Child songs is an exercise in futility—almost every single track the GOAT girl group released is more influential and exciting than the next.
