In June 2001, The Fast and the Furious was released across cinemas worldwide and shattered box office expectations - earning more than 40 million dollars on it's opening weekend.

The debut Universal action film saw Paul Walker take on the role of Brian O'Conner, an undercover cop tasked with the job of discovering the identities of a group of unknown car hijackers led by Dominic Toretto, played by Vin Diesel.

Since then, the street-racing saga has spawned multiple sequels and spin-offs and become one of the biggest movie franchises of all time, ranking seventh as the highest-grossing film series ever.

As the first instalment celebrates it's 20th anniversary, we take a look back on two decades of street-racing, spats and sad deaths.
