Worried ministers are to issue guidance advising against non-essential travel between Northern Ireland and both Great Britain and the Irish Republic.
It comes after a bid for an outright ban on travel to the rest of the UK was voted down. Many areas in the south of England have been placed under Tier 4 restrictions as the mutant strain of the disease causes havoc across the country.
Downing Street chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance says the UK are powerless 'to stop this getting into other places'.
