Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the government would be put under partial lockdown amid the continuing coronavirus crisis.

He said all shops and entertainment events in the country would be suspended, with the exception of basic necessities - such as food.

The country's emergency measures came shortly after France announced it would be on lockdown with businesses set to shut at midnight.

The lockdown was introduced in a frantic bid to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Spain is the second-worst affected country in Europe after Italy, with 191 deaths and 6,056 coronavirus infections.
