Slugging is hottest new skincare trend – but beauty expert has word of warning

TikTok-born trend has dominated the video sharing app, with the hashtag 'slugging' having now racked up 87.3 million views.But despite many people trying out the trend, Harley Street Dermatologist Dr Benedetta Brazzini has warned that the skincare technique may be doing more harm than good.Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, Dr Brazzini has shared all about what slugging is - and reveals the real secret to getting glowy skin this winter.She said: “Slugging is one of the newest skincare fads born on TikTok.

Slugging is when the entire face is covered in a thick layer of Vaseline (or similar petroleum jelly) before sleep.“Thought to have originated with Marilyn Monroe's makeup artist (who is rumoured to have made her do this at night before filming), then more recently to have come out of South Korea.“The goal of Slugging, if people have issues with dry skin generally, or in cold weather, is to lock in moisture and hydrate the skin overnight.”Although people want to try and replenish the moisture overnight, the petroleum-based product may not be helpful for healthy skin.Dr Brazzini continued: “When people wake up after performing this ritual they might experience glowy or soft skin, but if this bizarre practice works it can only be temporary, as petroleum jellies simply can't be absorbed deep into the skin.“The 'slug' will just act as a barrier, for temporary effect.”“Petroleum jellies aren't used in skincare products nowadays, due to the fact they can't be deeply absorbed into the skin, and aren't nourishing, so it's difficult to say with certainty what the results would be for 'normal skin types'.“If the user had acne prone or deeply oily skin it's very likely that slugging would provoke a breakout or irritation.”So.
