Sir Alex Ferguson once accused reality TV and a "mocking culture" as key factors which contributed to Steve McClaren's downfall.

McClaren was this week confirmed as a member of Erik ten Hag's backroom staff as the 61-year-old returned to Manchester United 21 years after departing.

The former England national team boss spent two years shadowing the legendary Ferguson at Old Trafford before embarking on a nomadic managerial career of his own.

However, his foray into coaching didn't go to plan. Having overachieved with Middlesborough, McClaren was appointed as manager of the Three Lions back in 2006 and he would subsequently see his career nosedive and lose all credibility.Between early October 2006 and March 2007, his England side scored one goal in five matches as a torrid run of results left the Three Lions' hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008 hanging by a thread.
