have been waiting to hear earlier today.A tariff of 25 per cent was imposed on US imports of Scotland's beloved drink in October 2019 when the industry was caught up in a tit-for-tat trade war resulting from a dispute over subsidies to aerospace firms.Scotch exports were badly affected with US tariffs on £5.6 billion worth of goods in retaliation for EU state support given to Airbus.It had been speculated that Trump - whose mother Mary hailed from the Western Isles - would lift the tariff in the final weeks of his presidency but a deal was never agreed.
Today's news was hailed by the Prime Minister as proof of what the UK could do as an "independent trading nation".Under the new deal the US will temporarily suspend all retaliatory tariffs.
