Ronald Koeman appeared to justify Lionel Messi's red card by highlighting how the Barcelona captain was repeatedly fouled throughout the match with Athletic Bilbao.
Messi, 33, let his emotions get the better of him in the dying seconds of extra-time in the Spanish Super Cup final. Barcelona had conceded late in the 90th minute of regular time and Inaki Williams scored the winner for Athletic as they won 3-2 after extra-time.
Messi's frustrations boiled over in closing stages and the Argentine hit Athletic forward Asier Villalibre in the head. Referee Jesus Gil Manzano was summoned to the pitch-side monitor to review the off-the-ball incident and duly showed Messi a red card.
