Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has plummeted to 28th in the Sunday Times Rich List. The Russian oligarch's was the United Kingdom's 8th richest person in 2021.

But his wealth fell by more than half from £12.2billion last year to £6billion in 2022 as the consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine hit home.

Abramovich, 55, was hit by sanctions from the UK government, who claimed he had "clear connections" to Vladimir Putin's despotic regime and added that he was among a group of businessmen who had "blood on their hands." The March sanctions hit Abramovich hard and forced the sale of his beloved Chelsea Football Club, a process that is still ongoing.

As well as those sanctions, Abramovich has also been hit with a sharp fall in his Evraz shares. The Russian's substantial loss of wealth means he is now below Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the British billionaire who launched a late bid to buy Chelsea earlier this month.
