However, things didn't exactly go to plan. The Gunners took the lead just three minutes in when a ball was swung into the box, making its way past two United players.
Varane swung his leg at the ball in an attempted clearance, while left-back Alex Telles tried to do the same.However, the ball fell to the feet of Nuno Tavares after Bukayo Saka's curled effort was tipped away by David de Gea.
The Portuguese defender made no mistake in tucking the ball into the net to get the home side off to the best possible start.But fans soon took to social media to question the nature of Varane's half-hearted attempt at a clearance, with one claiming he's "more like a Ford Focus than a Rolls Royce".
