Wayne Rooney was desperate to bring Manchester United defender Teden Mengi back to Derby County in the summer. A deal was all lined up and ready to go but financial fair play restrictions prevented the stricken Rams from signing players from other clubs.
Derby's loss is about to be United's gain though, with Ralf Rangnick potentially set to hand Mengi a full debut this week. United are already assured of qualification from Group F of the Champions League ahead of Wednesday's vist of Young Boys to Old Trafford.
So Rangnick could ring the changes from Sunday's 1-0 defeat of Crystal Palace, with United playing five times in 19 days starting with the Saturday tea-time trip to Norwich City.
