Ralf Rangnick had a one-and-a-half hour conversation with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after he agreed to become the interim manager of Manchester United.
Solskjaer was sacked after United were eliminated from the League Cup and then battered 4-2 by Leicester, 5-0 by Liverpool, 2-0 by Manchester City, and 4-1 by Watford within the space of five weeks.
Caretaker manager Michael Carrick arrested United's slump by guiding them to wins over Villarreal and Arsenal, as well as a draw with Chelsea during his three games in charge, but United have still only won two of their last nine games and are 10 points behind third-placed Liverpool.
