Racism row erupts as locals take 'Black's Head' off controversial pub sign to 'save it'

The head from a “racist” pub sign has been removed in a bid to protect it after the council revealed plans to take it down. Around 50 people gathered in Ashbourne, Derbys, underneath the wooden caricature, which rests on an arch outside The Green Man Pub & Black's Head Royal Hotel, on Monday evening.

Derbyshire Dales District Council had bowed to growing pressure after almost 35,000 people signed a petition calling for the removal of the controversial listed structure.

But local people have allegedly taken the head down to protect it from the council, claiming to have permission. Just hours earlier, officials announced the 200 year-old sign was being taken down.
