Queen to miss crucial Easter church service for only fifth time in her reign

The Queen has pulled out of attending the annual Maundy Day church service and will be represented for the first time by the Prince of Wales, Buckingham Palace said.

During the traditional service, The Queen distributes gifts according to the number of years she has lived and so would distribute 95 pence worth of Maundy money to 95 men and 95 women in recognition for their contribution to the church.

However, this year will mark just the fifth time in her entire reign that the Queen, who has recently been hit by a number of mobility issues, will miss the service.The 2020 and 2021 services were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and gift recipients received the money by post.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: "The Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will represent Her Majesty the Queen at the Royal Maundy Service at St George's Chapel, Windsor on Thursday 14th April."The Prince and The Duchess will be met by the Dean of Windsor, The Right Reverend David Conner KCVO and the Lord High Almoner, the Right Reverend Dr.
