Charles, Prince of Wales (Charles Philip Arthur George; born 14 November 1948) is the heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest son of Elizabeth II. He has been Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay since 1952, and he is the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
He is also the longest-serving Prince of Wales, having held that title since 1958. Charles was born at Buckingham Palace as the first grandchild of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. He was educated at Cheam and Gordonstoun schools, which his father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, had attended as a child. Charles also spent a year at the Timbertop campus of Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia.
Prince Philip united Prince William and Prince Harry after the death of their mother, Princess Diana, in 1997.William was 15 when the Princess of Wales died in a horrific car accident in Paris, with his brother, Prince Harry, 12.As is tradition, Prince Charles wanted the boys to walk behind the coffin of their mother, but up until the night before the funeral, the decision wasn’t finalised. In fact, Princess Anne once told ITV’s Chris Ship William’s role was partly influenced by the support of his grandfather, Prince Philip.
The Princess Royal said it came down to "a question of 'if you'll do it, I'll do it," Anne recalled. She went on to say that was Philip’s way "as a grandfather" to let him know he’ll be there if William and Harry wanted.
