Light winds and balmy temperatures in the region of 25ºC would in normal circumstances make today a perfect day for a barbecue or picnic.
But sun-seekers hoping for a day on the beach were being turned back this morning by a police checkpoint outside Brighton, as locals looked on and cheered.
One carload of day-trippers had reportedly come all the way from Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire – a four hour, 200 mile round trip.
