plastic surgeon has revealed why leeches are sometimes used during cosmetic surgery - which seems gross but is actually very effective.Dr Kumar, from Sydney, Australia, took to TikTok with an explanation as to why the blood-sucking parasites are still being used during procedures. In the clip, @officialdrkumar explained: "Did you know that we actually use leeches in plastic surgery?

It's not just something that was used back in the medieval days."We actually have a good scientific reason for using them. Now, leeches have got this substance that they, that they released.

It actually thins the blood and causes the blood to clot so much."When we're doing microsurgery and we actually find that that tissue is getting congested or in any situation where there's a lot of sort of blood going in, but not enough blood coming out, we can use leeches to actually help relieve that pressure until your body takes over and starts doing the work for itself. "While it might sound a bit gross, leeches are a fantastic addition to plastics."The NHS website confirms the doctor's explanation as a leaflet on the medieval-style treatment says: "Following tissue transfer or reattachment, the blood supply to that area may become thick and congested; this can cause loss of part or all of the reconstructed area."A leech or leeches may be placed in the area and by draining away small amounts of blood it is possible they can relieve the congestion, keeping the blood flow going."
