coronavirus in the UK. It is understood the animal had become unwell with Covid-19 after its owners had tested positive with the virus earlier this year.
A private vet initially diagnosed the cat with a common cat respiratory infection, but further studies found the pet was also co-infected with SARS-CoV2 - the virus known to cause Covid-19 in humans.
The confirmed case followed tests at the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) laboratory in Weybridge, Surrey on Wednesday, July 22.
Scientists at the University of Glasgow were also able to identify the finding as part of their research programme where they have screened hundreds of samples of Covid-19 infections in the feline population in the UK.
