Fresh from a stunning defeat, the party was left picking up the pieces after being abandoned by its 'Red Wall' constituencies which have traditionally formed a sweeping path of wins for Labour across the North.
A number of these constituencies had not voted Conservative for decades. Among them, Leigh, which had been a Labour stronghold since 1922.
