Chelsea and the whole of football is a positive one.The Crystal Palace boss, who signed Chelsea defender Marc Guehi last summer and also has Blues forward Conor Gallagher on loan, made his comments after Thursday’s sanctioning of Abramovich.

In response to the war in Ukraine and his links to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the UK government has frozen Abramovich’s assets in this country, including the South West London club.

Yet despite the dark, murky end to his 19-and-a half-year Stamford Bridge reign, Vieira argues the Russian oligarch’s impact on our game has been largely beneficial. To support that assessment, the ex-Arsenal man pointed to the vast amount of one-time Chelsea Academy products who have gone on to play for other clubs. That, allied to the club’s massive trophy haul, makes Red Rom’s roundball revolution a significant success, according to Vieira. The Frenchman said: “You just have to look at what Chelsea have won in the last 20 years.“And the number of players their Academy has developed that have played in the Premier League and Championship is unbelievable.“So, of course, his period at Chelsea has been positive.

I think it’s been really good for football in general.”Vieira’s response to how the Abramovich era should be remembered - in respect of football - is somewhat ironic. After all, he was Arsenal skipper when the oil billionaire bought Chelsea in the summer of 2003 - and blew the transfer market apart with his bottomless pits of cash.Do you agree with Vieira?
