Parliament accepts 'numerous' paintings of slavers hang in House of Commons

Parliament has been urged to recognise its “shameful” past in supporting the slave trade after admitting “numerous” paintings hang in the Commons depicting slave owners.

Lib Dem leadership candidate Sir Ed Davey has called for a permanent exhibition, accepting Parliament’s role in both developing and abolishing the slave trade.

The House of Commons Commission said they did not know how many paintings of slave-owners were on display. But they accepted Parliamentarians in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries were often directly involved in, and profited from, slavery and the slave trade - and so they are likely “numerous.” But speaking on behalf of the Commission, SNP MP Pete Wishart said: “The intention of the artworks is not to venerate
