Parents baffled after secondary school allows boys to wear skirts but not shorts

Parents at a Norfolk secondary school have been left outraged by a uniform policy which states boys can wear skirts and not shorts during hot weather.The Metro reports that students at Wymondham High Academy will be subject to the new ‘gender neutral’ uniform policy.It comes after male students reported being uncomfortable in trousers during the summer.READ MORE: Birmingham explosion: First pic of woman killed in house blast as tributes paid to loving mumIn the face of backlash, the head teacher of the school Mr Jonathon Rockey has defended the change and said it’s something the school is ‘proud of.’He said: “Many parents were supportive of us considering a ‘summer uniform’, which we will consider for 2023-24.‘In the short term, we have enabled pupils to remove their blazers during hot weather.‘Changing everything about our uniform in one go, especially with the current financial concerns, would not be sensible so we are able to stage changes over a period of time.”However, one parent said the decision not to relax restrictions on shorts even when temperatures passed 30C as "insane".They added: "The school appears to be deaf to parents clearly voicing concerns on this matter."It is not in our children’s best interest to be overdressed and overheated in the summer."This is not conductive to an effective learning environment and I believe it is a health and safety issue."Another parent told Metro: "We have been repeatedly asking, year after year, for shorts to be added to the uniform."The parent said: "Every summer boys have found the heat hard to bear and so there have been repeated requests for shorts for both genders."Offering a skirt as an option is not gender neutral.
