Bonhams in its 20 May Montres et Chronographes Paris sale.Jonathan Darracott, Bonhams global head of watches, says that the watch was brought to his attention by a contact in Europe and, at first, he was sceptical of the provenance. “We did a lot of research and found two portraits by Sir Cecil Beaton that clearly showed Picasso wearing the watch,” he says. “We can identify it as our watch because there is a kink in the spiral bracelet which shows up very prominently in one of the photographs.
The more we looked into it, the more everything aligned.”Further research has shown that the pieces were made for the artist in the 1960s by Swiss watchmaker Michael Z.
