Breakthrough cases of the new Omicron variant are being seen in vaccinated people - but the strain appears to be causing 'milder' symptoms, an expert has said.
Professor Tim Spector, of King’s College London, said most people experience 'cold-like symptoms', but warned that the variant could still cause long-term risks.
The genetic epidemiology expert is the lead scientist on the Zoe study, which tracks coronavirus infections and symptoms in the UK population.
According to the latest incidence figures, there are estimated to be 83,658 new daily symptomatic cases of Covid-19 in the UK on average - an increase of 4 per cent from 80,483 new daily cases last week.
