Van de Beek was handed his first start of the season for United's shock 2-1 Champions League defeat to Young Boys on Tuesday, but was substituted at half-time, replaced by Raphael Varane, following Aaron Wan-Bissaka's red card.
Van de Beek looked calm and composed on what was just his 16th start in United colours, but Solskjaer was unable to provide him a fair crack of the whip due to a required tactical shake-up, with the Reds switching to a back-three for the second 45 minutes.
