Obituary: Family pay tribute to East Kilbride doctor who treated thousands of townsfolk

East Kilbride and generations of families has died. Dr Simon Macquire passed away at McKillop Gardens care home in the Village four days before his 82nd birthday.

He had been a GP in the Murray surgery in East Kilbride since 1969 up until 2001. Prior to this he had spent his early career working in Crosshouse and Ayrshire central hospitals.His great friend, Dr Alastair MacCormick, was already working in the Murray surgery and discussions resulted in him choosing to come to East Kilbride.Dr Macquire was born in 1938 in Stamford, Lincolnshire.His father was a Congregationalist minister but his mother tragically passed away when he was a young boy.After leaving boarding school he moved to Glasgow in 1959 after being accepted to study medicine.
