Nottingham Forest are set to sign Union Berlin forward Taiwo Awoniyi in what should be a club-record transfer, it's claimed. The Reds are reportedly in advanced talks over a club-record £17.5 million deal for the 24-year-old attacker, with The Telegraph saying a deal is close.
The striker enjoyed a good season with Union Berlin, scoring 15 goals in the Bundesliga last campaign. He is thought to become Steve Cooper's first significant signing of the summer following the East Midlands side's promotion to the Premier League following a 23-year absence. The club look set to face the German side in a pre-season friendly next month, meaning Awoniyi could be in line for an early reunion with the side he's currently registered to.
The forward was signed by Liverpool in August 2015 for a fee of around £400,000 but was never able to gain a place in the first-team and went out on loan to seven sides over the course of his six years at Anfield, before moving to Berlin permanently for a reported £6.5m in July 2021.
The Telegraph report Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of Awoniyi and feels he can make an impact in the Premier League, despite him not making a single appearance on Merseyside under his tenure.Forest manager Steve Cooper, meanwhile, who earned the side promotion last season, has decided to agree on a new contract during talks with club owner Evangelos Marinakis while on holiday in Athens.
