Not wearing sunglasses or using air-conditioner could cost you £5,000 and nine points

Drivers could have more than the rising cost of fuel to worry about this Summer.During sunny weather, drivers could be slapped with a £5,000 fine and a driving ban if they fail to prepare for a burst of sun through their car windows.According to Rule 237 of the Highway Code, drivers are expected to take due care and attention when driving, including when it's extremely sunny.And should a traffic officer find that you haven't done so – and that includes not wearing sunglasses – you can be landed with a huge fine.It could also be dealt with at the side of the road with a simple £100 fine, too.

Andrew Jervis, co-founder of ClickMechanic, an online marketplace for car repairs, said: “Many of us will welcome a few days of sun, but it could spell disaster for unprepared motorists. “We all have a responsibility to drive with care and attention, and we need to be on alert for anything that can affect our ability to do that."Sun glare is often tricky to drive with as it can affect how we perceive the road conditions, while an unexpected short burst of light from behind a cloud can really harm our ability to see.“It can be worse when the roads are wet after a rainy spell, with sunlight reflecting off puddles and into our eyes.

It’s important to be on guard for the adverse effects of sun glare while driving, whether this is through wearing sunglasses, removing any shiny objects from the dashboard or lowering the sun visors.”The rule also states that you have to keep your car “well ventilated to avoid drowsiness”, which means that you have to keep your windows open or air conditioning on, otherwise you will be liable for the hefty fine, too.The rule adds: “Be aware that the road surface may become soft or if it rains after a dry.
