Rupert Murdoch's News Corp has agreed to acquire Houghton MifflinHarcourt's Books & Media consumer publishing unit for $349 million in cash.
The deal, unveiled on Monday,covers 7,000 book titles, including such popular backlist titles as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and other books by J.R.R.
Tolkien,1984andAnimal Farmby George Orwell, andAll the King’s Menby Robert Penn Warren.It also includes such children’s and young adult classics asCurious George,The Polar Express andThe Little Prince.
The business will become part of News Corp's HarperCollins Publishers, which currently has rights to Tolkien’s works in the British Commonwealth.
